Managing Editor
Tucker Publishing has an exciting opportunity for the position of Managing Editor to administer the day-to-day operations of our publications, Evansville Living and Evansville Business, as well as our digital content platforms. If you are an experienced journalist and storyteller who enjoys a fast-paced environment, a city-centric environment, juggling a variety of tasks, leading an energetic editorial team and collaborating with the entire production team, you might be the person to join our 21-year-old company!
Responsibilities for Managing Editor:
• Work with the editor, staff writers, and creative team to plan all stories and content for each bi-monthly magazine and our digital platforms.
• Develop and maintain the story budget (story line-up, not financial budget) of each issue.
• Lead content planning meetings with input from the Publisher/Editor and Creative Director.
• Oversee current staff of two Staff Writers and their daily activities.
• Oversee the execution of all stories for all magazines and platforms, working with staff writers and freelance content providers.
• Write stories for all magazines and platforms as needed.
• Intake all stories from writers and freelancers providing thoughtful guidance. Edit stories for accuracy, style adherence, and tone; oversee factchecking process.
• Plan ahead to execute large stories for future issues.
• Receive pitches from writers, organizations, readers, and community members.
• Maintain and organize active story idea file.
• Collaborate with Creative Director and Photographers on photographs and images for stories in the publications and digital platforms, including a twice-weekly digital newsletter.
• Lead weekly production meetings with Creative Director.
• Work hand-in-hand with production team during publication deadlines, managing the online proofing process.
• Work with Publisher/Editor and Creative Director on custom projects for individuals, organizations, and businesses.
• Work with President and the Publisher/Editor on overarching themes for the publications and platforms.
• Develop relationships with constituents who look to TPG publications to inform the greater Evansville, Indiana, market.
• Meet deadlines for individual stories, sections, and magazine production.
Qualifications for Managing Editor:
• Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BS) or equivalent from four-year college. Degree preference in journalism or communications/public relations with journalism/newsroom experience.
• Minimum five years’ work experience preferably in a newsroom, at a magazine, or in a demanding corporate communications field.
• Strong editorial judgment.
• A passion for city magazines and magazines in general.
• Ability to find and develop story ideas.
• An instinct for problem solving and working with very busy teams.
• Must be able to handle a number of projects simultaneously and have attention to minor details.
• Must work well in a deadline-driven environment.
• Very strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and Google platforms.
• Photography skills a plus.
• Working knowledge of graphic design software platforms (InDesign) a plus.
